Middle School Subjects: English, History/Social Studies, Mathematics

Please note that these are only general guidelines. Approval and/or acceptance of specific coursework will be determined once an application, fee, and official transcripts have been submitted for review.

English, Middle School 4-8 (#215)
  • 12 semester hours of credit specifically focused on middle grades education; and
  • 15 semester hours of credit in the subject area

Subject area credit must include:

  • secondary developmental reading;
  • advanced composition beyond the college freshman level; and
  • English language including history and grammar of the language.

Coursework Requirement:

  • 12 semester hours of credit specifically focused on middle grades education; and
  • 15 semester hours of credit in the subject area

Subject area credit must include:

  • nine credits in history, including:
    • United States history;
    • Western civilization or European history; and
    • non-Western history.

    AND

  • coursework in at least three of the following areas:
    • political science;
    • economics;
    • geography;
    • sociology;
    • anthropology; or
    • psychology

Effective March 1, 2020, following the update to the 2020-21 designated shortage areas, educators who hold a valid Initial, Provisional, or Professional Educator Certificate with a teaching endorsement may be eligible for an additional endorsement in middle school math by obtaining a passing score on the appropriate Praxis II test. Additional coursework in the content area is no longer required.

Please note: New endorsements designated as shortage areas for the 2020-21 school year will be issued with a July 1, 2020 effective date.
