Fees

It’s free to change your address.

You can request a duplicate driver’s license or non-driver ID after changing your address for $30. Your new driver’s license or non-driver ID will feature your new address.

How to change your drivers license and registration address online

Step 1: Gather what you’ll need

  • Your first and last name exactly as it appears on your current driver's license or non-driver ID
  • Your date of birth
  • Current address on file with the DMV
  • Your CT driver’s license or CT non-driver ID number
  • Your Social Security Number

Step 2: Change your address online

Changes made online are effective once the transaction has been successfully processed. If you previously requested a driver’s license or non-driver ID duplicate or renewal online, the credential will be mailed to the preferred shipping address selected when completing your transaction.

Get started

Step 3: Update your current registrations

On your vehicle registration(s), cross out the old address and write the new address in the space provided.

Step 4: Get an address label and put it on your current license or ID

Get an address label from any CT police department or by contacting the DMV call center.

Place the new address label on the back of your license or non-driver ID.

How to get a DMV transaction receipt

Receipts can be requested for transactions processed online after May 24, 2021. Get your receipt now.

Options for changing your address

All Connecticut residents with a vehicle registration, CT driver's license, or CT non-driver ID card must update the DMV within 48 hours of any change of address.

Note: You can also register to vote and change your organ/tissue donor status when you update your address.

Vehicle property tax

The vehicle property tax in CT is based on the current value of your vehicle.

Motor vehicle property tax bills for registered vehicles are sent from your local tax assessor. Tax bills are due in January and July.

Your motor vehicle tax bill can be delayed following a change of address, even if you file a forwarding order with the post office. Be sure to check with both the tax collector in your previous town and your new town if you don’t receive a bill. You need to pay your motor vehicle tax, even if you don’t receive the tax bill. Failure to pay the motor vehicle tax bill may result in the denial of your registration.

If you move out of state, you must cancel your registration to ensure that your vehicle isn’t assessed motor vehicle taxes in Connecticut. See information on how to cancel a registration.

Who is eligible

Any Connecticut resident with a vehicle registration, driver’s license, or non-driver identification card can change their address online.

Change how your name appears on your registration

Step 1: Gather what you’ll need for your DMV visit
  1. Certified documentation that shows the change of name (e.g. - marriage license, civil union certificate, divorce decree, probate court documents, etc.).
  2. Only the registration document needs to be presented, because the ownership on the Certificate of Title doesn’t change.
  3. A Registration Affidavit (Form B-301) must be completed. If you want to change a name on both a driver's license and vehicle registration, you can do both changes during one appointment at a DMV office.
Step 2: Make an Appointment

You’ll need to visit a DMV office to change your name as it appears on your registration.

Make an appointment now

Change your name on your CT license or non-driver ID

Name updates to your driver’s license or non-driver ID are provided by appointment only at DMV hub offices or DMV express offices.

Step 1: Visit the Social Security Administration (SSA) to file your name change.

It may take up to 48 hours for SSA to process the change; this must be processed prior to updating your driver’s license or non-driver ID.

Step 2: Gather what you’ll need for your DMV visit

Original documents are required. Photocopies and religious marriage certificates will not be accepted.

  • A completed Change of Name Request (Form E-78).
  • Current driver's license or non-driver ID.
  • Certified documentation that shows the change of name (i.e., marriage license, civil union certificate, divorce decree probate court documents).
  • License or non-driver ID. When making any material change (e.g., name change, changes to date of birth, gender changes, etc.) to a driver's license or non-driver ID card, the former driver's license or non-driver ID card must be surrendered in conjunction with the issuance of a Temporary Paper Card.
  • Payment for fees. A new license or non-driver ID will be issued indicating the changes made, there is a $30 fee to change your name on your driver's license or non-driver ID card. DMV express office locations, including AAA locations and Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union locations (Milford | North Haven | Norwalk), may charge a convenience fee of up to $8 per DMV transaction.
Note:

The same list above applies for replacing a lost, stolen, or damaged CT driver's license or non-driver ID. Learn more about replacing your license or ID by requesting a duplicate.

Step 3: Make an Appointment

Make an in-person appointment now

Fees

  • If you do not turn in your current registration, a $20 duplicate registration fee will be charged.
  • DMV express offices, including AAA locations and Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union offices (Milford | North Haven | Norwalk), may charge a convenience fee of up to $8 per DMV transaction.

Did you know?

  • You’re not required to remove “Under 21” from your driver’s license.
  • You may submit your request as early as one week before your twenty-first birthday.
  • Your new license will be mailed to you within 20 business days.

Fees

Remove “Under 21” statement from license: $5

Your current photograph on file will be used for the new license. The fee can be paid with a check or money order made payable to DMV.

How to

Although it’s not required, you can request to have the "Under 21" statement removed from your driver’s license through by mail if you are no longer under age 21.

Step 1: Complete an application for under 21 statement removal (Form CI-3)

Step 2: Mail the form along with payment to:

Department of Motor Vehicles

For more information, please see Central Issuance.

Track the delivery of your new card to see when it will arrive.

Requesting a new photo

If you’d like to have a new photo on your license, you’ll need to schedule an appointment at a DMV office and request a duplicate driver’s license ($30 fee).
