I-84 ABC Bridge
Rehabilitation of Bridge Numbers 01235 and 01236,
Interstate 84 over Marion Avenue in Southington

DOT Project No. 0131-194/195

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Bridges 01235 & 01236 carry I-84 Eastbound & Westbound respectively over Marion Avenue in the Town of Southington.

The rehabilitation work on the bridges is limited to the replacement of the superstructure, safety upgrades, and some minor repairs to the substructure. The current bridge decks are composed of concrete on pre-stressed concrete girders overlaid with bituminous concrete. The structures will be replaced utilizing Accelerated Bridge Construction to minimize the impact to the traveling public. New structures will be built in staging areas adjacent to existing structures and then moved into place with Self Propelled Modular Transport units.

The new superstructures will be prefabricated on site in staging areas adjacent to the bridges. 1-84 mainline and Marion Avenue traffic will remain open during the entire prefabrication period using only temporary lane closures for other work associated with the bridge work. Upon completion of the prefabrication of the new superstructures, 1-84 eastbound and westbound at exit 30 and Marion Avenue under the bridges will be closed for one weekend.

The existing structures were built in 1963 and are single span structures that consist of a concrete deck slab on prestressed girders. The new structures will be of a similar design however the vertical clearance on Marion Avenue under the bridges will be increased based on evidence of impact damage on the fascia girders. The existing vertical clearances are 21 feet 8 inches (21'-8") at the eastbound structure and 15 feet 10 inches (15'-10") at the westbound structure. The proposed vertical clearances over Marion Avenue are 22 feet 2 inches (22'-2") at the eastbound structure and 16 feet 4 inches (16'-4") at the westbound structure.

DOT Project No. 0131-0194/0195 was awarded to Northern Construction Service, LLC at a cost of $6,031,429.40 on June 7, 2013 and is scheduled to be completed July 2014. The project is being administered by the Department's Office of Construction, District 1 Rocky Hill
