Overview
State Archaeological Preserves are an important mechanism for protecting Connecticut's archaeological heritage. Many agencies and private citizens work together to preserve that heritage, including the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), the Historic Preservation Council, the Office of the State Archaeologist at UConn, Connecticut’s archaeological community, and concerned citizens and property owners.
How to Qualify
To qualify as a State Archeological Preserve, archaeological resources must be listed on either the National or State Register of Historic Places and have the agreement of the owner of any private property involved.
Archaeological investigations at designated State Archaeological Preserves require an Archaeological Permit issued by the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism.
