LT. GOVERNOR WYMAN SAYS STATE SEEKING NOMINATIONS
FOR CONNECTICUT VETERANS' HALL OF FAME
Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman today announced that the state is seeking nominations for the Connecticut Veterans' Hall of Fame, which recognizes distinguished veterans who have made significant contributions to their communities after leaving military service.
Wyman and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy encourage all citizens to consider submitting a nomination for the Class of 2011 by the Sept. 30 deadline.
"This is one of the most lasting ways we can thank and honor those special patriots who stepped up to defend our nation and, when they returned home, remained fully committed to improving the lives of others," Wyman said.
Approximately ten Connecticut veterans, living or deceased, are inducted each year based on recommendations from an executive committee and final selection by the Governor. Sixty-two current and former citizens of Connecticut have been inducted to date, including five recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Gov. Malloy said: "These men and women are natural leaders and role models and are an inspiration to all of us. The Hall of Fame is a great way to give them the lasting respect and recognition they deserve."
Veterans who served in times of war and peace are eligible for nomination. Applications should describe the nominee's contributions to their community, including the areas of education, public safety, volunteer organizations, health care, recreation, elected office and other areas of public service.
Nominees must:
· Have been born in Connecticut or resided here for at least five years.
· Meet the definition of a "veteran" under the Connecticut General Statutes 27-103.
· Have received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces.
