Secretary of the State Denise Merrill Statement on the End of the Pence-Kobach Voter Suppression Commission

“I am proud to have stood up to the Pence-Kobach voter suppression commission and to have refused to share Connecticut voters’ personal information with this deceitful attempt to ‘prove’ the President’s wild claims of voter fraud and justify wholesale voter suppression.

Although it is undoubtedly good news that President Trump has bowed to reality and ended this sham commission, I welcome this news with caution. The President apparently continues to cling to his desperate claims that voter fraud caused his loss in the popular vote. Contrary to his repeated claims, there is absolutely no evidence to support this view. His ominous reference to the Department of Homeland Security continuing to ‘review these issues’ is a clear sign that we must remain vigilant to ensure that every American citizen’s right to vote is protected.

I will continue to protect the voting rights and personal information of Connecticut citizens from President Trump, Kris Kobach, and all others who try to put their fingers on the scales of democracy to serve partisan interests.” - Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise Merrill
