Verification of Experience in the Occupation

Verification of occupational experience is required from previous and/or current employers. A letter on official letterhead is required, including the original signature of the owner of the business, your supervisor or the director of human resources. The letter must attest to your specific dates of service, position held, whether the service was part or full-time, and include a brief description of responsibilities in the position. A notarized statement may only be submitted if the employer is no longer in business or if you are self-employed.

Connecticut Technical and Education Career System (CTECS)

Occupational Subjects in Vocational-Technical Schools (#090)

  • High school diploma;
  • Six years trade experience in the specific occupational subject requested;
  • Six credits in teaching vocational and industrial education; and
  • A course of study in special education comprised of not fewer than 36 clock hours, which shall include study in understanding the growth and development of exceptional children, including handicapped and gifted and talented children and children who may require special education, and methods for identifying, planning for and working effectively with special-needs children in the regular classroom.

Practical Nurse Education in Vocational-Technical Schools (#108)

  • Bachelor's degree;
  • Valid RN license;
  • Three years nursing experience;
  • Six credits in teaching vocational and industrial education; and
  • A course of study in special education comprised of not fewer than 36 clock hours, which shall include study in understanding the growth and development of exceptional children, including handicapped and gifted and talented children and children who may require special education, and methods for identifying, planning for and working effectively with special-needs children in the regular classroom.

Health Occupations in Vocational-Technical Schools (#109)

  • High school diploma and eight years related work experience; or a bachelor's degree and 3 years related work experience;
  • Valid health license;
  • Six credits in teaching vocational and industrial education; and
  • A course of study in special education comprised of not fewer than 36 clock hours, which shall include study in understanding the growth and development of exceptional children, including handicapped and gifted and talented children and children who may require special education, and methods for identifying, planning for and working effectively with special-needs children in the regular classroom.

Applied Curriculum & Technology In Comprehensive High Schools

Trade and Industrial Occupations in Comprehensive High Schools (#098)

  • High school diploma;
  • Written request by the employing agent;
  • Three years related work experience or one year related work experience and two years of specialized schooling;
  • Six credits in professional education; and
  • A course of study in special education comprised of not fewer than 36 clock hours, which shall include study in understanding the growth and development of exceptional children, including handicapped and gifted and talented children and children who may require special education, and methods for identifying, planning for and working effectively with special-needs children in the regular classroom.

Agriculture/Aquaculture Education (#041)

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in agriculture or aquaculture;
  • One year related work experience in agriculture or aquaculture;
  • Six credits in professional education; and
  • A course of study in special education comprised of not fewer than 36 clock hours, which shall include study in understanding the growth and development of exceptional children, including handicapped and gifted and talented children and children who may require special education, and methods for identifying, planning for and working effectively with special-needs children in the regular classroom.

Health Occupations (#103)

  • Bachelor's degree;
  • One year experience in health occupations;
  • Valid health license, if appropriate;
  • Six credits in professional education; and
  • A course of study in special education comprised of not fewer than 36 clock hours, which shall include study in understanding the growth and development of exceptional children, including handicapped and gifted and talented children and children who may require special education, and methods for identifying, planning for and working effectively with special-needs children in the regular classroom.

Marketing Education (#089)

  • Bachelor's degree;
  • One year of marketing experience;
  • 15 semester hours of credit in marketing fields;
  • Six credits in professional education; and
  • A course of study in special education comprised of not fewer than 36 clock hours, which shall include study in understanding the growth and development of exceptional children, including handicapped and gifted and talented children and children who may require special education, and methods for identifying, planning for and working effectively with special-needs children in the regular classroom.

Cooperative Work Education (CWEDO) (#104)

  • Bachelor's degree;
  • Connecticut educator certificate that authorizes teaching in grades 7-12;
  • 30 months of successful teaching experience;
  • One year of non-teaching experience;
  • Three credits in principles and organization of CWEDO;
  • Three credits in each of the following:
    • Foundations and Principles of Vocational Education; and
    • Labor and Market Analysis Trends and Job Readiness; and
  • A course of study in special education comprised of not fewer than 36 clock hours, which shall include study in understanding the growth and development of exceptional children, including handicapped and gifted and talented children and children who may require special education, and methods for identifying, planning for and working effectively with special-needs children in the regular classroom.

Interim Certificates

If you are requesting an endorsement in an area or field for which a bachelor's degree is not required, or for agriculture education, health occupations, marketing education, or practical nurse education program, you may be eligible for a one-year certificate with a deficiency of up to six credits in addition to the required course of study in special education, once all other requirements for certification are met.  The certificate may be renewed for one additional year, upon application, to allow for a total of two years to meet course work requirements.
