  • The CIAS highway safety device meets the FHWA's performance requirements for highway crash cushions as a “Test Level 3” stationary device.  These national standards were established by the Transportation Research Board [National Research Council] through the National Cooperative Research Program, NCHRP Report No. 350, "Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features.” 

    The CIAS was developed originally in the 1980’s and was approved at that time by the FHWA under earlier safety performance criteria, as defined under NCHRP Report 230.
