Temporary Closure of Atlantic Street Underpass for Metro North Bridge Replacement Project on February 19, 2019

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that temporary road closures and detours will be taking place starting on or about February 19, 2019, to continue concurrent construction operations associated with the replacement of the Metro North/Atlantic Street Bridge.  Atlantic Street, between the southern side of South State Street and Dock Street under the Metro North Railroad Bridge, will be temporarily closed.

Rail service delays are not expected and pedestrian access will be maintained under the Atlantic Street Bridge. Motorists are advised to follow detour signs and to allow for extra travel time.

During this closure, Atlantic Street will be widened, the new bridge abutments will be constructed, and the bridge superstructure will be assembled on the southern side of the existing bridge on Atlantic Street.  The replacement bridge will be rolled into place  between June 28-July 7, 2019.  The new, wider bridge will accommodate a new Track #7 for dedicated local train service along with a commuter platform and egress stairs.

Following the bridge installation, Atlantic Street will remain closed and South State Street,  between Guernsey Avenue and the northbound Exit 8 I-95 touchdown ramp on South State Street will be temporarily closed. During this period, Atlantic Street under the bridge will be widened to accommodate 3 southbound and 3 northbound lanes and lowered to increase the vertical clearance under the bridge to 14’6” to better accommodate commercial and emergency vehicles. It is expected that on September 8, 2019, all surface roads will re-open.

DOT Project No. 135-301 & 301-163 was awarded to Halmar International of New York, NY on September 1, 2017 for $74,846,308 with an official start date of July 1, 2018, and is anticipated to be complete on November 30, 2020.
