Replacement of Wheelers Farms Road Bridge over Route 796 Scheduled to Begin in Milford

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing the start of work for the replacement of the Wheelers Farms Road Bridge over SR 796, in Milford.

The project includes the complete demolition and replacement of the existing bridge, raising the clearance of the bridge, increasing the span and the widening of lanes. Additionally, an acceleration and deceleration lane will be added to SR 796 for the I-95 interchange. The project will be performed in 3 phases. Phase 1 is the demolition and construction of the east half section of the bridge. Phase 2 is the demolition and construction of the west half section of the bridge. Phase 3 is the addition of the acceleration and deceleration lanes on SR 796.

The contractor will be engaging in preemptive work on the bridge, beginning with the installation of temporary traffic signals, and then the installation of temporary precast concrete barrier. The project is staged construction, with half of the bridge scheduled to be demoed and rebuilt, while the other half utilizes alternating one-way traffic on it. Utility work is also necessary.

DOT Project no. 0083-0264 was awarded to New England Road, Incorporated at a cost of $6,848,318.00 on 02/04/2019 and is scheduled to be completed by 11/20/2020.
