Replacement of Bridge 02589 Carrying Route 97 over Cold Brook in Norwich

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing the commencement of work activities beginning on November 25, 2019, for the replacement of Bridge 02589 carrying Route 97 over Cold Brook in Norwich.

The project is necessary to correct the structural deficiencies of the existing bridge which is in poor condition.  Additionally, the existing bridge is functionally-obsolete and is considered hydraulically inadequate.

Bridge work includes the replacement of the existing structure with a new three-sided, 30-foot wide by 8-foot high, precast concrete frame founded on micro-pile supported cast-in-place concrete pile caps. Precast concrete headwalls and wing walls will also be constructed.

The project also involves roadway improvements at Route 97 including new drainage, bituminous concrete pavement at the approaches to the bridge, metal beam rail installation, the application of pavement markings and new signing.

The contract was awarded to Rotha Contracting Co. Inc. of Avon, Connecticut at a cost of $2,490,910.55 on October 11, 2019, and is scheduled to be completed in October 2020.

Traffic may experience delays at the project site to allow for the construction.  Due to light traffic volumes there will be no hourly restrictions.

A Route 97 closure and detour will be implemented for the replacement of the bridge for a maximum of eleven weeks.  The closure will be coordinated with the local school calendar and is tentatively scheduled from June 9, 2020, through August 24, 2020.  A press release will be issued at a later date providing the actual start date of the bridge closure and the associated detour route to guide vehicular traffic around the project site.

Motorists are urged to obey the posted speed limit and to utilize caution through this and all other construction work zones.
