Access to I-91 Southbound Via Route 5/15 Southbound Exit 87 Scheduled to be Removed for Construction Activities

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing the planned long-term removal of access to I-91 southbound via Route 5/15 southbound Exit 87.  The scheduled closure will begin on Monday, September 30, 2019, and will remain in effect for approximately two years.  Motorists wishing to enter I-91 southbound will be directed to Exit 86. Note that access to Brainard Road from the Route 5/15 southbound Exit 87 off-ramp will remain open.

This configuration is necessary to facilitate ongoing construction activities associated with the I-91 Charter Oak Bridge Project.

Project Information:

The I-91 Charter Oak Bridge Project includes two projects designed to reduce congestion and improve safety in Hartford, East Hartford, and Wethersfield. DOT Project Nos. 0063-0703 and 0159-0191 were awarded to O&G/BHD, JV as one contract at a cost of $213 million. Work began on April 1, 2019 and is scheduled to be completed May 26, 2022.  More project details, including lane closure information, can be found on the website at www.I-91CharterOakBridge.com.
