Route 1 in Old Saybrook to Reopen on Saturday, Pending Completion of Bridge Installation Activities
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that Route 1 in Old Saybrook will reopen to traffic on Saturday, November 18, pending the completion of bridge construction/ installation activities.
The road has been closed since Friday, November 10, 2017, at 5:00 AM. while a new bridge structure over Center Brook -utilizing Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques - has been set in place, and the approaches  to the bridge have been reconstructed. ABC methods minimizes impacts to the motoring public and nearby businesses by condensing the timeframe in which the work affects traffic.  A conventional construction technique at this location would likely have resulted in a one-way alternating traffic pattern for approximately 5 months, as opposed to the 9-day full closure needed for ABC.
Detour Info:
  • Eastbound traffic (west of the closure) will be directed to Route 166 (Spencer Plain Road) then the I-95 NB (Exit 66) On-Ramp. Traffic will then use Exit 67 I-95 NB at Rte 154 (Middlesex Turnpike)/Rte 1(Boston Post Road) to access points on Rte 1 east of the closure.
  • Westbound traffic (east of the closure) will be directed to Rte 154 (Middlesex Turnpike) to I-95 SB Exit 67 On-Ramp. Traffic will then use Exit 66  I-95 SB at Rte 166 (Spencer Plain Road) to access points on Rte 1 west of the closure.
DOT Project No. 0105-0211 was awarded to LaRosa Earth Group, LLC at a cost of $1,079,219.40 on November 22, 2016, and is scheduled to be completed November 30, 2017.
