The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that preliminary work including lane closures is scheduled to start on or about Monday, April 3, 2017, for the Rehabilitation of Bridge Numbers 03160 A-D, 03301, 03303, 01765 and 01766 on I-84 in Harford – known as the Hartford Viaduct. Motorists can expect lane closures on I-84 between the hours of 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM Monday through Friday, and between 7:00 PM and 10:00 AM on Saturdays and Sundays.

The steel girder structures have unique staging and maintenance and protection of traffic requirements. Bridge substructure, bearings, floorbeam, girders, stringers and deck repairs are required. Parapet and median barrier replacement as well as partial reconstruction, milling and overlay of existing roadway sections are included. This rehabilitation work is necessary to keep the bridges operational and safe until a reconstruction solution for the existing Viaduct, which includes these structures,  is implemented through a future I-84 Hartford Viaduct replacement project.

This project was awarded to The Middlesex Corporation of Littleton, Massachusetts on February 8, 2017, at a cost of $39,968,993.68. The project is scheduled to be completed by November 30, 2018.

In addition to the above, the  CTDOT is in the process of developing and evaluating a redesign of I-84 and its ramps between Flatbush Avenue and I-91 in Hartford - a project known as The I-84 Hartford Project.  The reconstruction project will address I-84’s structural deficiencies and improve traffic operations, safety, and mobility.  The I-84 Hartford Project  is working to reduce the highway’s negative impact on the city, create opportunities for development, and improve connections to other modes of transportation.
