Traffic Alert- Interstate 84 Westbound On-Ramp from Marion Avenue in Southington at Interchange 30 to be Closed to Traffic on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, from 9 a.m. to Midnight
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that the on-ramp to I-84 westbound from Marion Avenue, Interchange 30, in Southington will be closed to traffic from 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014, until approximately midnight.  The ramp closure is required to position a large crane for the delivery of prestressed beams for the I-84 westbound structure being built in the staging area adjacent to the ramp.
The ramp closure is needed to allow for the positioning of the crane which will be hoisting the new prestressed beams onto the westbound platform so that the new bridge deck can be constructed.  The project is on a very tight timeline and the contractor and manufacturers are working to keep the project on-time and on-budget.   Any delays could compromise the completion of the work before the July 4th holiday weekend.
The bridge replacement project consists of the superstructure replacement of Bridge Nos. 01235 & 01236, which carry Interstate 84 over Marion Avenue in Southington.   The proposed construction will be performed using accelerated construction methods. The new superstructures will be prefabricated on site in staging areas adjacent to the bridges.  Upon completion of the prefabrication of the new superstructures, I-84 eastbound and westbound at Interchange 30 and Marion Avenue will be closed for one weekend which is tentatively scheduled for 9 p.m. on Friday, June 20 to 5 a.m. on Monday, June 23, 2014.  The prefabricated superstructures will be moved from the staging areas using Self Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs) to replace the existing superstructures.  The existing bridges will be removed and new structures will then be set into place.
Information on the project and progress photos are available on the Department’s website here.
