Ebola Virus in Wastewater
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued interim guidance: Interim Guidance for Managers and Workers Handling Untreated Sewage from Individuals with Ebola in the United States (November 20, 2014). The CDC website provides guidance for handling sewage which may contain the Ebola virus.
CDC's guidance emphasizes the fragility of the Ebola virus compared to other pathogens. It recommends adequate education in the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and diligent use of such equipment when exposure to the virus might be anticipated. It does not recommend additional treatment of potentially contaminated wastewater at the source.
