Consumer Protection Hosts 7th Cross-Cultural Communications Symposium
HARTFORD – On Thursday, February 23, 2023 The Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) will host the 7th annual Cross-Cultural Communications Symposium: “Talking About My Generation: Challenges and Opportunities of Generational Communication.”
This year’s symposium will focus on learning to communicate effectively with different generations, which is critical to full inclusion. In addition, panelists will speak to the ways in which we can understand and address bias against ages – both young and old. Attendees will have the opportunity to listen and learn from the stories of advocates, activists, policy makers, community leaders, and national and local policy experts who believe that by working together we can understand how generations are more similar than different, and inspire us to develop ways in which we can connect intergenerationally to improve the lives of all of the state’s residents.
The 2023 Symposium keynote speaker is Bobby Duffy, Professor of Public Policy and Director of the Policy Institute at King’s College London, and the author of The Generation Myth: Why When You're Born Matters Less Than You Think, which challenges myths and stereotypes around generational trends.
“It is easy to make assumptions about how certain generations communicate, but effectively communicating across generations isn’t one-size-fits-all,” said DCP Commissioner Michelle H. Seagull. “We are proud to offer this annual symposium once again to help organizations think about the best ways to spread their messages by breaking down and understanding barriers to full inclusion, whether that’s gender, race, ethnicity, language, accessibility or age.”
The Cross-Cultural Communications Symposium is free and open to the public. Attendees can learn more and register for the symposium by visiting DCP’s website.
This all-day event will be held at the Connecticut Convention Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This is an in-person event. A livestream for virtual attendees is available upon request. Masks are strongly encouraged for in-person attendees.
