“These routine compliance checks help us to identify the businesses that knowingly or unknowingly make alcohol accessible to youth,” Rubenstein said. “In this way, we can bring the establishment back into compliance, suggest additional education or training if needed, and thereby help reduce youth access.”

On September 23, 2011, Department liquor agents worked with officers from the Newtown Police Department in conducting alcohol compliance tests in the town of Newtown. Six bars and restaurants were tested for compliance.  It is alleged that three establishments failed by selling to the volunteer youths. The establishments that allegedly failed are:

·            Pacific Asian Restaurant, 123 South Main Street, Newtown

·            Pub 25 American Grille, 266 South Main Street

·            The Inn at Newtown, 19 Main Street

On September 29 and 30th, officers from the Putnam Police Department were joined by liquor agents in conducting alcohol compliance operations in that town. On Thursday evening, September 29th, seven package stores were tested for compliance.Two stores allegedly failed by selling alcoholic liquor to the 18-year old youth volunteer provided by the Governor’s Prevention Partnership.The stores which allegedly failed are:

·            Sunny Discount Liquors, 150 Providence Street, Putnam

·            Uncle Dan’s Wine Beer and Booze, 347 Kennedy Drive

On Friday, September 30th, ten restaurants and bars in Putnam were tested for compliance.  The minors were ages 15 and 18.It is alleged that three establishments sold alcoholic liquor to the youths.The establishments which allegedly failed are:

·            Bella’s Bistro and Martini Bar, 75 Main Street, Putnam

·            Palmieri’s Pizza, 235 Kennedy Drive

·            Chickering Café, 26 Union Street

Following conclusion of the Department’s investigation, these businesses may be called to appear at an administrative hearing before the Liquor Control Commission to address the charges, and could face administrative penalties.

Commissioner Rubenstein thanked the Newtown and Putnam Police Departments for their participation in the compliance operation and their ongoing diligence.
