New Canaan Gets Perfect Score on Liquor Compliance Check; Three Stores Cited During Seven-Town Check in Eastern Connecticut

HARTFORD, July 11 – The Department of Consumer Protection is releasing today the results of liquor compliance checks it conducted over the weekend. The operations were conducted with involvement of youth volunteers who were trained and provided by the Governor's Prevention Partnership

On Friday, July 8th, agents from the Department’s Liquor Control Division and officers from the New Canaan Police Department conducted compliance checks of all package stores and grocery stores that sell beer in that town.  Seven (7) stores were tested for compliance and all passed, by not selling liquor to the undercover youth volunteers.

On Saturday, July 9th, state Liquor Control agents partnered with the Troop D, Danielson "Quality of Life Taskforce" to conduct compliance checks at all package stores and grocery stores that sell beer in the towns of Danielson, Thompson, Brooklyn, Hampton, Canterbury, Sterling, and Chaplin.  In all, 19 stores were tested for compliance and 16 passed by not selling liquor to the undercover minors. Those stores that allegedly sold alcoholic liquor to the minor(s) and thereby failed the compliance check are:

  • Frank's Liquors, 1 Hampton Road, Chaplin
  • Friendly Spirits, 40 Wauregan Road, Danielson
  • Brooklyn Market, 107 Hartford Road, Brooklyn

If the Department’s allegations are found to be true, these stores may be called to appear at an administrative hearing before the Liquor Control Commission to address the charges, and could face administrative penalties.

“Overall, the towns tested this week scored very well on the compliance checks, and we commend the permittees and local police on their continued attention to this matter,” Consumer Protection Commissioner William M. Rubenstein said today. “However, we expect 100% compliance. It’s extremely important that all permittees take extra care not to sell alcohol to minors. Reducing youth access to alcohol can help to prevent needless tragedies.”

The Commissioner thanked the New Canaan Police Department and the Troop D, Danielson "Quality of Life Taskforce” for their participation in the compliance operation and their ongoing diligence.
