FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 30, 2019

The former Chairman of the Democratic City Committee in Stamford was arrested today and charged with absentee ballot fraud and forgery in connection with absentee ballots cast in the city’s 2015 municipal election.

JOHN MALLOZZI of 60 Spring Hill Lane North, Stamford, was arrested by Inspectors from the Office of the State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Stamford/Norwalk on a warrant charging him with 14 counts of False Statement in Absentee Balloting and 14 counts of Forgery in the Second Degree.

The arrest is the result of an investigation by the Stamford/Norwalk State’s Attorney’s office following a complaint from the State Elections Enforcement Commission concerning absentee ballots cast in the municipal election held in Stamford in 2015.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, municipal election officials in Stamford alerted authorities to improprieties after a person who was recorded as having voted by absentee ballot showed up at the polls to cast his ballot. Mallozzi is a former Chairman of the Stamford Democratic City Committee.

False Statement in Absentee Balloting and Forgery in the Second Degree are class D felonies punishable by up to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000 on each count.

Mallozzi was released on $50,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned in Stamford Superior Court, G.A. No. 1, on February 11, 2019. The charges are merely accusations and Mallozzi is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

State’s Attorney Richard J. Colangelo, Jr., expressed his appreciation to the Inspectors in the State’s Attorney’s office, the State Elections Enforcement Commission and the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Division of Scientific Services and the Stamford Police Department for their work on this case.

The case will be prosecuted by the Office of the State’s Attorney for the Judicial District of Stamford/Norwalk.
