Former State Troopers Sentenced to Prison for Wethersfield Assault
The Hon. Edward J. Mullarkey imposed sentence on Rupert Laird, 33, of Manchester and Xavier Cruz, 31, of Wethersfield in New Britain Superior Court today. Cruz and Laird are former Connecticut State Police Troopers who were sentenced in connection with their involvement in a serious assault in the Town of Wethersfield on February 18, 2017.
Laird received a total effective sentence of 8 years to serve after having been convicted of Kidnapping in the Second Degree, Assault in the Second Degree and Cruelty to Persons.
Cruz received a total effective sentence of 10 years the execution of which is suspended after the service of 2 years with 5 years probation after having been convicted of Unlawful Restraint in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree and Cruelty to Persons.
“The Wethersfield Police Department did a thorough and professional investigation of this matter and their hard work led to these convictions. At the time of the incident both defendants were sworn law enforcement officers. They have since lost their positions. Today they’ve been brought to justice for the very serious crimes they committed.” New Britain State’s Attorney Brian Preleski.
This case was prosecuted by the New Britain State’s Attorney’s Office.
