Mission
The Joint Council of Connecticut Fire Service Organizations was formed in 1997. The Mission of the Joint Council is to further the needs of the state fire service through inter-association cooperation; legislative action; public education; and fire service education.

Membership
The membership of the Joint Council is limited to two members of each of the statewide fire service organizations.

Meetings
Members of the Joint Council hold their meetings at the State Capitol during the legislative session in an effort to provide visibility and easy access to legislative members. Meetings are held quarterly, the first week in June, September, December and March. Special meetings are held as the need arises.

The Joint Council Working for you

  • Facilitates the introduction of legislation before the State Legislature that benefits the Connecticut fire service
  • Monitors all legislation proposed before the Legislature for impact on the fire service
  • Serves as a resource for Senators and Representatives on legislation that affects the fire service and/or fire safety
  • Lobbies the Legislature by providing information that would help them make informed decisions
  • Provides expert testimony before legislative committees and public hearings
  • Coordinates activities with other organizations to solicit and support efforts in the interest of the fire service
  • Develops position papers on issues of importance
  • Informs the fire service of important issues pending before the Legislature and their potential impact on the fire service
  • Schedules regular meetings with the Governor and Lt. Governor and members of their staff
  • Hosts a Legislative Reception annually during each session

What can you do?

The Joint Council needs every member of the fire service to become active and to know the identity of their local Representative and Senator. This local contact is an important part of the fire service's visibility at the Capitol. You should make yourself known to your Representative and Senator and make them aware of your needs and concerns.

The Council serves as a resource to fire service members that have questions about the legislative process. Individuals, individual fire companies, or departments that are interested in submitting legislation are encouraged to submit their proposals through their organization of membership. Proposals that are introduced are discussed by the Joint Council for strategy. The Joint Council then makes every effort to ensure passage.
